Fix “View Reliability History” (Reliability Monitor) Page Is Completely Blank in Windows 7

When you try to view the reliability history (Reliability Monitor) of your computer via Control Panel or Action Center, the reliability history page may be completely blank/empty. This can happen if the Task Scheduler Service or RACTask scheduled job is disabled in your computer.

To re-enable tracking of events by the Reliability Monitor, use these steps:

Verify if the Task Scheduler service is started/running

Click Start, type Services.msc and press {ENTER}
Double-click Task Scheduler.
Make sure if the Startup Type is set to "Automatic", and the "Service status" is mentioned as "Started". If that’s not the case, download Task Scheduler service REG file from this article page, run the REG file and restart Windows. After rebooting, verify if the Task Scheduler service starts correctly.
If the reliability history / reliability monitor still shows blank data even after starting the Task Scheduler, you may have to enable the RACTask scheduler job, as explained below.

Verify if the RACTask Job is Enabled

Click Start, type task scheduler, and click Task Scheduler from the list.
Expand Task Scheduler Library, expand Microsoft, expand Windows, and click RAC
From the View menu, click Show Hidden Tasks

Right-click RACTask and choose Enable

Close and reopen the "view reliability history" page. The entries should now be populated correctly.


 
 

Microsoft is warning Windows XP, Server 2003 users of zero day flaw

Customers still on Windows XP, and there are many thanks to corporate IT departments, have a number of reasons to be concerned. The biggest of which is that the operating system is scheduled to die this coming April. No, it won't suddenly stop working, you'll still be able to boot up your computer and continue on your merry way, but Microsoft will no longer support it. That's important, because it means that bugs and security flaws will not be patched.
Now Microsoft is warning of one of those flaws, in the form of a new zero day vulnerability in the vintage OS. Advisory 2914486 states that the company "is investigating new reports of a vulnerability in a kernel component of Windows XP and Windows Server 2003. We are aware of limited, targeted attacks that attempt to exploit this vulnerability." The software giant does promise that this bug does not affect newer versions of Windows, only those on XP and Server 2003 have reason for concern.
Security researchers at Sophos explain the problem as a "bug is in the NDPROXY.SYS driver, which co-ordinates the operation of Microsoft's Telephony API (TAPI)." The researchers go on to announce that instances have been found in the wild. Sophos also claims that, due to the nature of the exploit, it presents a rather tough problem, when it comes to finding a solution. That's never what you wish to hear, especially if you have hundreds of these systems deployed in your business.
At the moment, there is no solution for the problem. The company states only that "upon completion of this investigation, Microsoft will take the appropriate action to help protect our customers. This may include providing a security update through our monthly release process or providing an out-of-cycle security update, depending on customer needs." In other words, all Microsoft can really do right now is tell customers to stay calm and hope for the best.

MIT 3D sensor can track transparent, moving objects

A new breakthrough in imaging technology from MIT could allow for more accurate 3D tracking and sensing, and tackle the thorny problem of how to detect transparent objects — all with a camera that costs just $500. This "nanocamera" was debuted at Siggraph Asia, and represents a major breakthrough in 3D sensing.

The current generation of 3D sensors, like those in the new XBox One, use a technology called "time of flight". A pulse of light is fired out, and since light travels at a known speed, the time it takes to bounce off, return, and hit a sensor is used to generate information about how far away the subject is. But that technology has trouble with transparent and translucent objects, as they don't bounce back light like opaque objects do, and can return faulty data.
Instead, this new technology borrows a technique from telecommunications industries, and embeds timing information into the light it sends out. Here's how the press release describes it:

Instead, the new device uses an encoding technique commonly used in the telecommunications industry to calculate the distance a signal has travelled, says Ramesh Raskar, an associate professor of media arts and sciences and leader of the Camera Culture group within the Media Lab, who developed the method alongside Kadambi, Refael Whyte, Ayush Bhandari, and Christopher Barsi at MIT and Adrian Dorrington and Lee Streeter from the University of Waikato in New Zealand.
“We use a new method that allows us to encode information in time,” Raskar says. “So when the data comes back, we can do calculations that are very common in the telecommunications world, to estimate different distances from the single signal.”

Because of that, the new nanocamera can be used to accurately account for clear objects, and still locate their information in 3D space. And since the fix is essentially software based, the camera was able to be built using extant technology, notably LEDs, which are capable of strobing at high enough speeds for this new method to work.
The researchers behind the project say that it could be used for medical imaging, or better collision detection for cars since it can handle obscured conditions like snow and fog. Or else for more accurate gesture and motion tracking, which, given the popularity of the Kinect, might be a slightly more likely path.

Toda Seiko announces its first interchangeable lens for X-mount cameras

For many photographers, the words "Made in Japan" on a lens have almost religious significance. With the move by many camera manufacturers to manufacture their products outside of Japan where labor is less expensive, those three magic words are harder and harder to find. There's a relative newcomer in the interchangeable-lens game, though, and it's products are Japanese-made, something that could perhaps give it a little jump start -- although its first product is curious indeed.

Tokyo-based Toda Seiko, which sells its products under the Digital King brandname, isn't completely new to optics. The company already makes a wide range of accessory lenses that attach to your interchangeable lens or your camera's built-in lens, as well as addon lenses for smartphones. The new announcement, though, is a variant of its first true interchangeable lens, currently available in Sony E-mount trim, and coming soon as a Fuji X-mount variant.

 

The new optic is a fully manual 12mm diagonal fisheye with a dim f/7.4 fixed aperture. You read that right -- the aperture cannot be changed, which is pretty unusual for an interchangeable lens. Nor, too, can focus be adjusted, even if there's what appears to be a focus ring. (It's apparently a trim piece.) Instead, the lens has a fixed focus design, and everything from around 20 inches (50cm) to infinity should be roughly in focus. The lens has a relatively simple optical formula with four elements in four groups, and 7-layer multicoating.

Dimensions of the optic are 2.6 inches (65mm) in diameter, and 2.3 inches (59mm) in length. Weight is 7.8 ounces (220g) excluding the lens caps. Pricing in the Japanese market is set at ¥25,000, which is around US$250 at current exchange rates.

Photography Gear Problems and its Low-Tech Solutions

 



Photographers are a resourceful and crafty bunch. They have particular needs which, in the absence of money or availability, they will search for alternative solutions or create their own. If you're finding yourself in the same situation, but having trouble figuring out a way to solve your problems, check out these commonly used low-tech photography gear alternatives.

Macro Lens

Want to shoot macro images but can't afford a macro lens? Then a reversing ring is just what you're looking for. This $5 piece of metal allows you to mount your lens backwards onto your camera. This is referred to as the poor man's macro lens. Despite its low cost, this alternative method can actually produce some very high quality results and several professional macro photographers use this method to get into ultra macro ranges not possible with most real macro lenses.

Quick Tripod

No one wants to carry a tripod around everywhere they go, but sometimes you're in need of one in a pinch. The easiest and cheapest solution is to find a nearby stationary object such as a bench, trash can, car hood, tree stump, or door frame and use it to steady your camera. However, these things are not always in a convenient place for your composition. One alternative is a little gadget you can make at home. Tie a string to your tripod screw on one end, and tie a washer to the other end. In the field, attach the screw to the base of your camera, let the washer fall to the ground, and then stand on the string so that it is tight. This will eliminate the majority of vertical camera shake, and it allows you to move around and recompose your scene. Unfortunately, this won't work well if you're using a lengthy shutter speed as horizontal camera shake will still be present.

Reflectors

Reflectors are great to have for outdoor portraiture without flash and in many other situations. But you don't need to spend a lot of money on large reflectors of different colors with fancy reflective surfaces. Instead, you can buy a simple white poster board as a mobile reflector. Or, if you need a large reflector in the studio, a big sheet of foam core will work well. You can also buy black version of both of these if you need to block light off.

Diffusion Box

These little things are great for cutting down the harshness of you flashes and studio lights. Large diffusion boxes can run pretty high, but they're not something you can't create on your own. Try browsing your local fabric store for a good translucent material that can be used. If you're making a small diffusion box, paper towels or regular paper can be used. Just make sure that you're not overheating these materials, as they could potentially catch fire. As long as they are placed at an appropriate length from the bulb, you should be fine.

Rain Gear

A DIY set of rain gear is possibly one of the easiest and most important things you can carry with you. A simple trash bag is all you need to keep your gear completely dry should a thunderstorm occur while you're outside shooting. Without it, you may find yourself running for cover before you camera becomes a useless digital brick. Bringing a trash bag for yourself may not be a bad idea either.

Lens Cap Holder

There are many, many lens cap saver gadgets that you can buy online, and many of them work very well. But as a quick and easy solution, all you need is a strip of velcro. Just place one piece on the bottom of your camera, and one on the front of your lens cap. With this, you'll never lose your lens cap again...hopefully.
